News - Oliva, Costa Azahar, Spain

A British woman who had been living in Oliva since 2006 and then mysteriously disappeared , is now thought to have been murdered by her 63 year old husband . The husband appeared before magistrates in England this week and was remanded in custody until mid-August . He was also charged with perverting the cause of justice . British police have been working with Spanish police in an attempt to discover the reason for the disappearance of this woman . News - Orihuela Costa, Spain

On Thursday there was almost a double tragedy when two brothers fell into the water near Orihuela . One of the boys drowned in the irrigation reservoir in the rural district of La Murada and the other almost drowned in an attempt to save him . The boys had got into the reservoir through a hole in the fence  and it is thought that the nine year old  slipped and fell into the water and the 11 year old went in to try and save him. The father of the two boys found his younger son and managed to resuscitate him, the body of the 11 year old was found later .  Spain News In Brief - Villena Costa Blanca Alicante Province

The town of Villena near Alicante is to have a new station to accommodate the stopping of the new AVE high speed train link. The mayor has announced that an agreement has been made with the government and it will mean that Villena will be only the second dry port in Spain supported by AVE. It has taken 10 years of negotiating between Villena council , regional government and the Ministry for Public Works to bring this to fruition . Spain News In Brief - Denia / Javea, Costa Blanca

The college of architects and quantity surveyors in Alicante  released figures this week to show the extent of the slowdown in construction work in the Marina Alta . Using figures between 2006 and 2007 it shows that worst hit are the towns of Denia and Javea  where the number of properties have fallen by 67.6 and 75.7 per cent respectively. In 2006 in Javea there were 97 projects ongoing  with a total of over 581 new homes . In 2007 the figure had dropped to 64 projects and only 141 new homes , a drop of 34 %in the number of projects and 75.7 % in the number of homes being built . Spain News In Brief - Torrevieja

Groups of employers from across the Vega Baja met in Torrevieja to discuss the economic crisis . They are looking for solutions to the problems that they are facing . The association of merchants , hotels , bars , restaurants , young employers  and builders will meet every two months to establish programmes in order to promote business . A spokesman for the builders said that they are all suffering a dramatic crisis . They all agree that everyone has to work together as everyone is involved and one crisis will cause another in a different business .Shops  bars, hotels  and restaurants have seen their profits fall by up to 40% in the last 6 months . Foreign visitos can help but the image of Torrevieja has to change if it is to attract more tourists —at the moment it is known for its high crime rate . The team will start working in September . Spain News In Brief - Calpe Alicante

Two Argentinian men have been arrested in Calpe by the Guardia Civil. The arrests are in connection with the robberies committed against people leaving banks in the town . They were arrested as they attempted to steal money from an elderly lady. Two of the four man gang escaped when the officers tried to arrest them . The victims spoke of being sprayed and then a man would say that the liquid had come from a balcony as a method of distraction . Another would try to clean the person and then in the confusion the money would be taken . Those arrested are being held in custody.

News Spain In Brief - Guadalest, Alicante

Last Monday a fire broke out in Guadalest near the reservoir . The alarm was raised shortly before 14.30 and the fire services from Benidorm and san Vicente , along with members of the forestry services were sent to the scene. Two helicopters and an aircraft were also used for dropping water onto the fire . It took just over two hours to put out the blaze . There was a security meeting in Altea recently where it was revealed that the crime rate in Altea had dropped by 12.1 %. This figure covers the first six months of the year and is compared to the same period last year . The mayor , security councillor , local police representitives and Guardia Civil were present at the meeting . Car theft had fallen by 35.59 %, bag  snatching by 78.57 % and violent robbery by 50 %. The number of Guardia Civil deployed to the area had increased by 75. The mayor voiced the fact that residents would now begin to have a heightened sense of security . Spain News In Brief - Calpe, Alicante Costa Blanca

Tenants in the Puerto Blanca Harbour in Calpe are angry because they all thought that their leases ran out in 2033 and now they have been terminated . Lawyers who represent the new administration of the Puerto Blanco , Guardia Civil and the councillor for regional infrastructure all attempted to evict them this week . All of these people have contracts for the next 25 years but under a new deal carried out by regional government and the new administration company , the contracts have been terminated . Angry contract holders have filed an official complaint with the courts alleging that they had not been given notice of the eviction and so it was illegal. There are 10 new fixed speed cameras in operation . Two are on the motorways and the rest on national roads . They are as follows ; A70 Villafranquesa exit , A70 18.5km mark in Alicante , the N332 through Guadamar , Santa Pola and El Verger ; the CV91 in San Fulgencio; the CV83 in Monovar and the CV734 in Javea . Six more speed radars will be installed in Murcia and eight in Castellon . New bypasses should help traffic congestion along the N332 through Campello, Ondara and Villajoyosa , however bottlenecks will still exist in Altea , Benissa ams El Altet .
